3rd Anniversary & Free Barbie Doll Tutorial :))

Last week marked the 3rd year of this blog.. aka.. when I started to bake and I am so happy to be where I am today.. and to have all the wonderful friends and fans who have supported me throughout these 3 years and as a way of saying Thank You, I would like to show you all how to make this Barbie Doll Cake Tutorial.  Ive been wanting to do a tutorial for quite some times now and since time is my enemy (being a fulltime working mother who works fulltime monday to saturday and having to care for the family and a 4yrs old son, and to juggle parttime baking, time is so precious to me) so I am constantly rushing, straight from home, bake, feed the son, prepare dinner (or go out when no time to cook), and once the son fast asleep (which is past 9pm), only I get some time to do the pre-decoration and caking..  So with all this rush, its very hard to find time to take step by step picture as I am often very forgetful or time simply dont permit.

Anyway, I made a free time once weekend to do this, yes, it takes longer time to prepare the cake as each step, a 5mins break needed in order to get the right pictures and I may have missed several steps as I get too carried away.. nevertheless.. here's the step by step of my Barbie doll cake tutorial:-

First Step ~ Baking the Skirt part Cake (which is the real cake)

I am using this cake mold specially for a doll's skirt and although I find the crease is very nice to get that pleating effect on the skirt, its not so practical and also it gives very small cake.  I actually had to add extra 6inch cake at the bottom to give it the height as otherwise its too short.  Make sure you grease the pan with shortening before lining the baking paper just to hold it into place and also extra shortening on the baking paper.

This is how the cake turn out and if you actually notice, at the bottom theres a bit of gap in between the cake and the cake board, that's where I actually joined my 6inch cake in between), once cooled down, ice the cake using whichever method you prefer (ganache or buttercream), in my case, I like to use buttercream icing and usually I'll do 3 coating, the picture here only shows the 1st coating.  With every buttercream coating, I put the cake inside the freezer for about 10mins to set it.

Just a tip if you're using a real barbie doll on the cake, do remember to cling wrap the bottom part to prevent staining it.

Next up is to make the top for the barbie doll, in my case, my design is strapless (easiest design) and emboss some pattern onto it to make it more interesting.  Then cover the cake with some fondant, it doesn't have to be neat as we will put more details on it later for the skirt.

To make the doll's skirt, cut a piece of fondant (slightly longer than the skirt's height), roll it flat and fold the top like the above picture. do it one by one while making sure you dont over smooth it, you actually wanted to have some crease to make it more natural like a full skirt. Stick it one by one as shown below.

Another option is to have the skirt in different colour as what I did below so it will look more interesting.

This is how it looked like after you have finished doing the skirt, (view from side, top and back) :)

Once the skirt is done, you might like to add more details to the whole outfit, in my case, I added some small flowers to the shoulder to act as off shoulder design.. very sweet don't you think? hehe.. :)

And I also add more design to the bodice of the skirt, using my single rose petal cutter (frill it) and some metallic silver sugar balls.

And I finished it off with a lace ribbon to give it princessy look :)))

This is the finished result of my Princess Barbie Doll! I loved it.. what do you think?? I hope this tutorial will help some of you to create this wonderful barbie cake doll for you loved ones! Cheerz and have a good day you all!! Till next time xoxo.

Woof Woof.. Can I Play With You??

"Puppies & puddles, licks and hugs,
soft and luvable, just look at their mugs..
A smile on their face, a twinkle on their eyes,
They're so sweet, no need to ask why..
Wet little kisses, soft gentle nuzzles,
not very complicated like crossword puzzled.
The arrival with love and joy in their heart,
just want your love, not to be apart..."

A Family Affair!

I had a request to do a cake for this customer's DH (dear hubby).  Her only request is to have figurines consisting of her family (husband, her son and herself) and to have a warm feeling type of theme.  It was such a last minute request so heres what I come up with. 3D Sofa Shaped cake (top and bottom are real cake, but the sides of the sofa arms are fondant) with the whole family watching TV in the living room! I received an email the next day saying that her husband, son and her whole immediate family loved the cakes!!! *Happy*** hehe....

Pirate Theme Party - The CAKE

About 2 mths ago while I was still on holiday back in the OZland.. I received an email from my loyal customer cum friend who wanted to organise a theme pary for her 10 years old son.  I was like "YAYYY" as I totally loved doing a theme party and to have the chance to do a themed dessert table.  She wasnt sure on what theme would be suitable.  No problem.. I have lotss of ideas in my head waiting to burst out!! hehe.. so at first I suggested to her to do a "Picasso the Painter" theme.. I thought that would be fun, lots of colours, and theres so much to do in a painter theme party! But she wasnt so keen on the idea as the first thing that pop in her mind was "MESS" hehhehe.. fair enuff!!  So then after a bit of brainstorming, I come up with "Pirate Theme".. as I believe its one of the easiest theme you can have.  I mean in Malaysia, its hard to get all these party theme outfit and accessories and not to mention to get all your guests to really participate.  So Pirate theme will be perfect as its easy enough to find a "stripes" shirts.. and swords, and hats.. and make your own mouthstache and eyepatch! So BINGO!! IDEAS SOLD!! yeah... time to rock n roll .. (*wottt..wottt..*..)

Whats the first thing to do?? OF COURSE...!! DECIDE ON THE MAIN CAKE!! and the rest will have to adjust!! So easy enough, she decided to have a 3D Pirate Ship Cake since she actually have a treasure box that she'll use it for the party,, so Treasure Box Cake was out!! Cupcakes was set right away to have those cute Pirate Face design! so yeah.. heres is the cake that I did!  I actually underestimate the time to make this cake as it actually took almost 10 hours to do (excluding the time of making the figurines which I usually do 3 -5 days before).  I was getting very tired when the cake was almost done and nope.. the sail is not even done yet!! *ARRGGHHHHHH...***  Usually when I get very tired, I get aggitated and so even the most simplest task seems hard! I tried to paint the ship to make it look a bit rustic but I was soo frustrated after doing it for 2 mins.  Lucky me.. my hb volunteer to help and boy..was he good at it!! I was thrilled to see the end result and I dont think I could do half of the job he's done! so yeah.. Thank You HB... this cake is dedicated to you!! *grinn.. **wink**.. hahahaa...

Im actually very happy with the end result and I can honestly said to myself that I think this is one of my best 3D cake so far!! So thank you Jova.. for giving me the challenge..(AGAIN!!)  hahaha.. and thank you HB for helping me making this cake! Your support is greatly appreciated!! :)))

Chinese Prosperity Peach Cake & Cupcakes Set

When I first got an enquiry to do cake & cupcakes set for 81st Birthday Party, I was too excited that I proposed a 3D Prosperity Peach Cake instantly.. and the design was inspired by a picture I saw on google and I found out, this cake was made by Amy Teoh.  My customers instantly fell in love with that design as her mom also likes to play mahjong. So the idea was sold and order was confirmed a few weeks before.  I didnt put much thoughts into it as I was having a family emergency that I had to deal with during that time.

A week before the order was due, that when I started to stress about how am I gonna make a tall oval looking peach cake.. when I dont really have the moulds.  So I thought.. and thought and thought.. and sorta.. figure it out..but honestly.. I felt very nervous about making this cake.  I haven't felt this way for a long time.. excited yes.. but not nervous!! I guess I was kinda pressured by it as this birthday party was very special.. I mean.. not many gets to live and celebrated past your 80th birthday and the fact, the lady that ordered this cake was such a lovely person and easy to deal with.  That made me even more pressured to do the cake well as I did not want to dissapoint her or her beloved mother and family members with the cake.

There were so many frustration that I had to overcome while making this cake.. to cut the story short, I actually had to recover it 3 times.. (yes.. wasted 3 times of fondant covering.. and the cake diameter needed abt 57cm of fondant covering.. yikess..) and I actualy re-did the cake as the cake somehow sinked in and it looked like more of a bees' nest instead of a peach.. was soo depressed n in panic state at that time.

Well luckily, the next day, my mind was more refresh and I actually re-did it (with the help of hb, he helped me to carve it into a nicer shape :P ) ..and Im glad I did.. as it looked soo much better!! *pheww..*

"Sugar & Spice..and Everything Nice ~ That's What LIttle Girl are made Of"

Yup..another baby shower order to do..and this time its a Girl..yay.. loves doing girly stuff as theres just soo many more things you can do with a Baby Girl Baby Shower Themed...

So after some consultation from the customer (the friend who's organising this Baby shower party), she told me that the Mummy to be loves to cook.. and infact..she's very good at it.. (Jamie Oliver's standard..~ wow.. what a lucky hb n kids.. to have her.. hehe..).  So yeah.. wanna me to come up with a kitchen theme.. so after few hours of brainstorming and lotsss of googling.. I've come up with this theme.. "Sugar & Spice.. and Everything nice ~ that's what little girl are made of! This theme will reflect the kitchen theme very well and at the same time I reckoned, it goes well with having a baby.. as I believe its truly like, sugar and spice.. sweet and spicy.. cos you dont just get to enjoy the baby's cuteness and sweetness but all the spicy works that goes with it.. eg: nappy changing, sleepless nite.. and the list goes on and on...

Anyway, back to the cake topic.. so for this Baby Shower Themed, I did a 3D cake to resemble a kitchen and the Mummy to be with her big belly cooking and smiling so happy, behind the counter is the sugar n spice's figurine to match with this theme.. and the baby blankets and baby blocks to resemble that this cake is for a baby shower.. as I feel otherwise there isnt any touch of 'Baby' in this cake..
And for the Guest's Gift Favour, the customer requested a fondant cookies.  I did 2 designs of the cookies and design the packaging according to the theme... and did my first cake pops!! YAY.. finally got around to do this babies..
